John Roberts
Trombone

John began playing the piano at the age of 5 while living on an isolated ranch in Southeastern Montana. There was no TV, but there was a piano. At age 11, he picked up trombone to play in the grade school band. After graduating in 1996 from Montana State University-Billings with a BA in Music Performance, John moved to Los Angeles to earn his Master of Fine Arts in Western Orchestral Trombone Performance from California Institute of the Arts.

Feeling equally comfortable in orchestral and commercial music realms, John has been touring, recording, and performing in Los Angeles, around the U.S. and around the world, including India, Europe, the Caribbean, Australia and Africa. Tours include Ricardo Lemvo and Makina Loca (Congolese/Cuban), Bobby Womack (Soul),The Temptations, The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra and Los Pinguos (Argentine). Other performances and recordings include 2008 and 2009 Grammys, Chris Botti, Feist, Sting, Dr. Dre, Ice T, Frank Sinatra Jr., Chaka Khan, Burt Bacharach, The Ojays, BET, NPR, PBS, 2005 Latin Grammys, Disney and others.

John also maintains a private studio, ranging from beginning to college level musicians. Along with his private studio, he regularly works and performs as a clinician in public and private schools, continuing to hone his skills as an educator by sharing the “real world” of music with future musicians.

John continues to free-lance as a performer, recording musician, arranger and composer with numerous Latin, jazz, gospel, orchestral, blues, R&B, Hip Hop, and commercial groups in Los Angeles and throughout the U.S. Currently, he is working on composing and producing two of his own projects: a brass quartet presenting classical, jazz and gospel arrangements, and a horn-fronted, blues, funk and latin-jazz inspired project designed for commercial venues.

When not dabbling in the world of music, John is likely found (or not found!) gallivanting about the hundreds of miles of trails in the Los Padres and Los Angeles National Forests via foot, 4WD, or mountain bike.
